How to Set Up a Dartboard at Home

Choose the lane before drilling

Stand where the board would go and map the complete path to the oche. Add space behind the player for stance, retrieval and another person waiting safely. Avoid doors, stair openings, windows and routes to frequently used storage. A long room is not automatically suitable if people must cross in front of active throws.

Check ceiling height and nearby fixtures. Hanging lights and fans must remain outside the natural throwing arc. In a shared room, a removable stand may create a safer orientation than forcing the board onto the most convenient wall.

Prepare the wall and mount

A regulation bristle board is heavy and receives thousands of impacts. Fix the supplied bracket into a stud, masonry or properly rated anchors following the manufacturer’s instructions. Add a surround or dense backboard before final positioning if it changes the mounting depth.

Set the centre of the bull at 68 inches, place the board on the bracket and adjust rear bumpers until it cannot rock. Rotate the number ring so 20 is precisely at twelve o’clock. Leveling matters both visually and for consistent practice on doubles.

Measure and mark the oche

Use a plumb line from the board face to make a floor reference. Measure 93.25 inches horizontally to the near edge of the steel-tip line. Soft-tip commonly uses 96 inches, so label a second line if the room supports both games.

A raised oche provides tactile feedback and prevents subtle foot creep. Tape and mats work when firmly positioned, but check them periodically. For steel-tip, verify the completed geometry with the 115.375-inch diagonal from bull to oche.

Light the target without glare

Position light so each wedge and wire remains visible after darts enter the board. A ring light provides broad coverage; balanced fixtures from more than one direction can also reduce hard shadows. Keep lamps outside the impact zone and route cables away from the walking path.

Test from the player’s eye level. Light that looks even from beside the board can glare or hide the triple ring at the oche. Matte surrounding materials often work better than reflective cabinets or glossy wall panels.

Finish with a safety and play check

Store steel-tip darts where children cannot reach them, and establish a rule that nobody retrieves darts until the turn is finished. Keep spectators behind the thrower. If the room is used by children, consider magnetic or age-appropriate soft-tip equipment instead.

Throw several practice turns, listening for movement and watching for shadows. Tighten loose mounting parts, widen protection where early misses land and verify the measurements one final time. A setup is complete only when it remains stable under real use.

Create a maintenance routine from day one

Keep the bracket instructions, spare board wedges and measurement notes near the setup. Every few weeks, check that rear stabilizers still touch evenly, cabinet fasteners remain tight and the oche has not crept. Rotate a bristle board by moving the number ring and placing a less-worn segment at the top; concentrated practice otherwise damages the 20 bed long before the rest of the sisal.

Inspect darts as part of the lane rather than separate equipment. Remove burrs from steel points with an appropriate tool, tighten loose shafts and replace torn flights that produce erratic entry. Clean the floor around the target so a dropped dart is visible before someone steps on it. Small repeatable checks preserve the installation and prevent a gradually deteriorating board from being mistaken for declining accuracy.
